The Legacy Lands Act passed the State Legislature! HB 1308 Conference Draft 1 directs 10% of the conveyance tax to the Land Conservation Fund for purchasing wild coastline and natural areas. The measure also increases the conveyance tax for high-end and speculative real estate sales. How can you help the Legacy Lands Act become law?
1. Ask the Governor to sign HB 1308 into law.
The fate
of the Legacy Lands Act lies with Governor Linda Lingle, who has until early
July to sign HB 1308 into law. Residents and visitors who support Legacy Lands
should contact the Governor and express their support for the measure.

to do:
Some sample
talking points:
I strongly support HB 1308,
the Legacy Lands Act, creating a dedicated source of funding to protect Hawaii's
wild coastal areas and special places and increasing the conveyance tax to
help fund our natural areas. Hawai`i is known around the world for its areas
of unspoiled beauty--areas that should be left in their wild, undeveloped
state. But it's not just scenery that the Legacy Lands Act will help protect.
Native habitat, watersheds, and working farms can also be protected. The best
method of protecting these lands is through outright purchase or establishment
of a conservation easement. Such arrangements benefit both the landowners
and the public.
Please pass the Legacy Lands Act, for our families, and for our future.
